Why accessories can make or break an outfit
Many of us have that one accessory we feel naked without, for some it might be a certain ring or necklace, for others, they may never leave the house without donning a fun scarf. But how much do you actually think about the accessories you wear everyday?
Personally, I can admit that I am guilty of undervaluing the role of accessories in an outfit. I put on the same ring and necklace everyday and maybe change my earrings once in a blue moon for a special event. It’s easy to get stuck in an accessories slump, constantly reaching for the same reliable pieces rather than seeing them as a crucial part of your outfit.
Take a quick look through history and you will realise that accessorizing is an important and heavily ingrained part of human nature. Accessories have been worn since ancient times often as symbols of protection, religion or status. Indeed, the oldest known form of jewelry is believed to be a necklace that dates back 40,000 years.
And just as our ancestors used them, accessories these days serve a similar function - to represent faith, love or simply personal taste and style.
Take your outfit game up a notch
Ever wondered how some people can look so good in a seemingly simple outfit? It’s because they know the important role accessories play in pulling your outfit together.
Take your comfiest pair of jeans and a trusty white t-shirt, for example, and you’ve got a functional yet lack lustre outfit, but pair them with a fun scarf, a gorgeous bag or a statement necklace and your style cred will shoot through the roof without the effort or expense of actually going out and buying a new outfit.
Adding accessories is key to styling an outfit - an often ignored part of dressing that involves tweaking and perfecting the small details that pull your look together. For example, adding a belt at the waist of a loose dress will make it conform to your shape and can be used to add colour or interest to your outfit.
Not only can accessories elevate your outfit, they can also be a way for you to express your personal style. For many of us, our style preferences change regularly - far too often to warrant continually revamping our wardrobes. Instead, adding a hint of style to your outfit through accessories is a relatively inexpensive and easy way to change up your outfits.
However, when it comes to accessorizing, you can have too much of a good thing so if you tend to get a bit over enthusiastic in your accessorizing, follow Coco Chanel's famous advice and “before you leave the house, look in the mirror and take one thing off.”
