Why accessories can make or break an outfit
Do you have an accessory you would feel naked without? For some it's certain ring or necklace. Others may never leave the house without donning a fun scarf. But how much do you actually think about the accessories you wear everyday?
Not much? You're not alone.
I am definitely guilty of undervaluing the role of accessories in an outfit. I put on the same ring and necklace everyday without thinking. On the odd occasion I might change my earrings for a special event, but that's as good as it gets.
It’s easy to get stuck in an accessories slump. Everything changes when you start to see them as a crucial part of your outfit.
Take a quick look through history and you will realise that accessorizing is an ancient art. Accessories have been worn for thousands of years as symbols of protection, religion or status.
Indeed, the oldest known form of jewelry is believed to be a necklace that dates back 40,000 years.
Take your outfit game up a notch
Ever wondered how some people look amazing in the simplest of outfits? It’s because they know how to use accessories to make the ordinary extraordinary.
Take your comfiest pair of jeans and a trusty white t-shirt. It's a functional yet lack lustre outfit. But pair them with a fun scarf, a gorgeous bag or a statement necklace and your style cred will shoot through the roof. All this without the effort or expense of going out and buying a new outfit.
Adding accessories is key to 'styling' an outfit. Styling is essential for creating great outfits. It involves tweaking and perfecting the small details that pull your look together.
For example, adding a belt at the waist of a loose dress will make it conform to your shape. It can also be used to add colour or interest to your outfit.
Not only do accessories elevate your outfit, they are also a way to express your personal style. For many of us, our style preferences change regularly - too often to warrant continually revamping our wardrobes. Instead, adding a hint of style to your outfit through accessories is a relatively inexpensive and easy way to change up your outfits.
However, when it comes to accessorizing, you can have too much of a good thing. If you tend to get a bit over enthusiastic in your accessorizing, follow Coco Chanel's famous advice. “Before you leave the house, look in the mirror and take one thing off.”
